Agents of Transformation

Romans 12:1 opens with the word “therefore,” signaling a shift from what God has already accomplished for believers in Christ to what that reality now requires of them. In essence, the new identity God has given you becomes the foundation for the new responsibilities you are called to live out.

The first of these responsibilities is to be transformed, and the pathway to transformation is the renewing of the mind—learning to think differently in light of God’s truth. Yet this transformation is never intended to remain private or internal. It is also missionary. Even as believers are being changed, they are simultaneously called to act as agents of transformation in the lives of others. Personal transformation is only complete when it begins to transform those around us.

Paul then draws attention to three key areas where our thinking must be renewed: how we think about ourselves, how we think about our gifts, and how we think about our community.
